Medical Physicist

Herman van Langen

Personal info

Herman van Langen (1957) studied physics at the University of Utrecht and received his MSc in 1983. He obtained his PhD in 1988, also in Utrecht, based on defending a thesis with a subject in the field of molecular biophysics.

He is highly inspired by applications of physics in life sciences.

He worked till his retirement in 2025. First a couple of years for a medical company. Followed by different hospitals. In the latter, he worked as a registered medical physicist. He was responsible for a safe, efficient and effective application of medical technology in the hospital organization. He was also the ionizing radiation expert for the organization. Innovation and risk analysis during the live time cycle of medical devices are key concepts for his role as medical physicist. Regulations set limits to the span of freedom to act.

He came in contact with Peracutus as a result of a demand which techniques are currently in use for volume determinations for patients with lymphedema. In this collaboration, the precision and accuracy of measurements turned out to be key concepts.

He is always driven by the question how a diagnostic process or a given therapy can be improved. This motivation is evident as he is (co)author of more than 50 peer reviewed scientific publications. Since 2025 he is involved in the further development of Peracutus Aqua Meth.
